Another good choice for dinner in the Hilton Head area. First, the views are fantastic. Its located right at a tip of the island near the lighthouse, and the copious windows offer a full view of the river. The service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. As for food, the calamari was some of the best I've had, with a great kick and nice and crunchy. I opted for the beef tips for my entree since I have to avoid most seafood. I'm not sure what spices they used, but the beef was tender and delicious, and the vegetables and pasta blended perfectly- its one of the best dishes I have had at a restaurant in a while. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal!

I was appalled by the attitude of the management at Topside. Someone in my party nearly ate a plastic bag in their mashed potatoes and management refused to take the matter seriously. One manager literally laughed at him and the other made no apology or gave an explanation. They brought the bill and made it seem like they were doing us a favor by removing one drink from the tab. When we asked to speak to the manager (Lisa) she did not treat our situation/complaint with respect and begrudgingly removed the plastic laced meal from the check. Myself and two others in the party have been vacationing in HHI for more than a decade and have never had an experience like this. We will NEVER come back to this establishment which was once something we greatly looked forward to. It's a shame that a restaurant with such foot traffic because of its location doesn't pay any attention to customer service. They seem to think that because they are located under the lighthouse at Harbour Town that they don't have to provide above average food or service and it's extremely disappointing. Topside needs to reevaluate how they treat their customers and attempt to take pride in what they serve and how they treat people.

Ehh....This place has a lot of potential but seems to kinda miss the mark somehow. The view from their dinning room is absolutely awesome at sunset. The service is great but the food is just "meh". That is, with the exception of the Calamari which was the best I've ever had. For a entree I ordered the Paella and it was hands down the worst version of Paella I've ever had. It was basically a plate with separate piles of rice, chicken, sausage and 4 shrimp on a skewer. The taste was fairly bland as well. If I go back here I'd try something else for sure. unfortunately, from what I saw of everyone else's plates at our table nothing really looked all that appetizing. I'd recommend going here for sunset, ordering a calamari and just enjoying the view. Probably the best value you would get from the place.

My family and I loved this place! The blackened redfish and the shrimp and grits were great! The fried cod and oysters were great too. The view is absolutely amazing and the restaurant wasn't too crowded at 6:30 on a Friday night. (We did get a reservation though.) Our waiter was great and we can't wait to come back!

RUN AWAY There is literally only ONE thing going for this place: the view The food is awful, service is awful and the inside is so out dated. The fish sandwich was so small, they make none of their own dressings, the fries were really the only good part.. There are a MILLION other places to go. This place needs to close.

We have eaten here on several occasions. The atmosphere is very nice and the views are great. Having said that, during our last few visits we were disappointed in the service and the food preparation. During our most recent, we had to ask for items several times and our server seemed to be more interested in speaking to other paitrons. In the end there were items we never received. We loved the calimari. It was lightly breaded and fried to perfection with a great sauce to compliment it. We ordered the she crab soup which while ok was very different than what we are use to. The green lentil curry was over the top spicy hot, which took away from its enjoyment. The salads were ok, though nothing to write home about. They have a very nice and extensive wine list with many options for both white and reds. We enjoyed a great Turley Zinfandel.

Simply delightful dockside spot. Fresh, local shrimp, the most charming & welcoming management team accommodated our large party, including taking care of 94 year old grandmother. Have their Dark & Stormy -- ahoy matey & say aye aye to Alyssa for a second round ... #piratepeople

The food was good - but the view is what you are paying for during the meal. My calamari was good - a little over cooked. My hubby had the sea scallops. I had the shrimp scampi. Both was excellent. As the sunset, we enjoyed the view. It was pricy and the decor is dated.

Excellent restaurant. Although location could make it a tourist trap, it really is not! The food is excellent, the menu creative and well-executed. Wine lust is top notch. Service is very good --- and as others have mentioned, Christopher is really outstanding. And of course the views are great. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this restaurant.

The food was great and so was the view. We were there at sunset and it was gorgeous ! I had the blackened tuna with black eyed pea salad and Kale slaw - yummy! My sister and mother split the seafood platter and still couldn't finish their portions. Price wise it was what you would expect for a seafood restaurant on the island. My only complaint was the noise level- very difficult to have a conversation with all 6 of us in our party. Great place to see on the island! Will come back in the future .

View was terrific. Drinks were great. The egregious offense was bringing a dozen oysters on a plate. No ice. Not chilled or properly cold, just cool. Additionally, the waiter hadn't a clue as to the type of oysters they were. This is a seafood restaurant? It's a shame because they were good oysters served in a way that a 4th grader would find fault with. So elementary that it seemed like a joke.

The food is just okay, it's the views that you're paying for really. Sunset is the time but need window table. I had seafood platter which was ordinary, fried green tomatoes=tasteless, calamari was saturated in sauce. Overall the place is just okay but probably overpriced

The food was good. Overpriced but good. However, as family-friendly as they would like to appear, they are not. $9-$11 for a kids meal is insane. Plus, there is not a baby changing station in the men's restroom. Only in the women's restroom. So there I am, hands full with my toddler girl in the women's room only to come out and find the husband waiting right outside the door. He tried change our baby in the men's room and couldn't. Such a load of sexist BS. Honestly, it made my husband want to go up to the bar, plop the baby on top and start changing him right then and there. Hey owner/manager, how about both bathrooms having a changing station like most restaurants? It's 2013 and dads are pretty involved these days.

I love this place. Our server, whose name I wish I had gotten from the check was incredible. He was extremely professional. He didn't interrupt active conversation at our table, but showed up when it was clear we were looking at the menus. We had the BBQ chicken appetizer. The chicken was tender, not over seasoned and it was a beautiful presentation. I also had a cup of the crab bisque. It was really a beautiful presentation once again. The soup was superb. I ordered the fish special, Corvina with the fruit salsa, fresh vegetables and potatoes. Again, the fish was tender and flaky and perfect. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and it was clear the potatoes were fresh. For desert it was the key lime pie. It is made fresh in house and served with a raspberry sauce. I got the sauce on the side just in case it was too much for me. I LOVED the key lime pie. It was served with a light whipped cream. It was outstanding. During dinner the sun set outside our window and the view was stunning. This is what the HHI experience should be. I met the chef here before Christmas and was very impressed with him so we had to give it a try. I think his name is Sean. Shout out to Sean for an impressive menu!

This is my first time dining at old harbor town. Got a tip from a shopkeeper that the only decent place for lunch was the quarter deck. So expectations were high. Ordered fried oysters and gumbo for appetizer. Gumbo was excellent but oysters were just ok. Lacking some flavor. Their mixed fried platter was above average to decent. My wife ordered crab cake sandwich and it was definitely mediocre. Service was average. I think it is family friendly enough. Lots of booze around though.y

Had a late lunch (1:30ish) here on Thursday, 11/14/13. No waiting. Seated our party of 5 immediately. You're paying for the view. We asked for seating indoors and they have a fantastic view. Unfortunately, there was a construction crew right outside the window jackhammering up concrete. Yep, jackhammer, ginormous compressor kind of work. So, I ask you, "why seat guests right alongside the jackhammering crew?" Couple of burgers, some crab bisques, salmon salad, half dozen oysters and shared two desserts (key lime pie and molten lava cake). Bill ran $125 without tip. Food was good. After desserts were served, our waitress pretty much disappeared. We waited for our check. And waited. Had to go to the bar and find a waitress to find our waitress. Food was ok. Service, not so much. If there was to be a next time, we'd try somewhere else.

My group of 8 dined at Topsides on a Monday evening in June. The view from the restaurant is very nice, but short of "spectacular". Our waiter was competent and attentive to our needs. Unfortunately he was probably the only thing about our experience that was above average. The kitchen rushed out our appetizers in what seemed record time and too fast, for my liking, to allow us to enjoy our cocktails. No sooner were we finished with our app's and our entrees arrived. Not sure what the hurry was about. Food was average at best. Seven of our dinners were as ordered, one was a mistake. The incorrect dinner was replaced within a very short few minutes. Impressive. Unfortunately it was incorrect again. Our waiter looked at his pad and he had written down the order correctly but the kitchen filled it incorrectly. Again, the mistaken entree was replaced in near record time and was not a big inconvenience. I'm not sure how the kitchen can put out food so quickly. Also, to their credit, the one dinner was removed from our bill proactively. All in all, everything was incredibly average. Unfortunately we were expecting an upscale experience for such a nice place and location. There are far better places on Hilton Head to dine.

We've been there a half dozen times over the past 5 years. On the most recent visit, quality was less consistent. There was a frozen lump in my wife's mashed potatoes, and the dinner rolls were like boulders. They mis-labeled the sweet and non-sweet tea so every time I asked for a new glass, I got the same (wrong) version. But the crab bisque was as excellent as ever, the service was attentive, and the view was spectacular. They have a non-listed early bird dinner special from 5PM to 6PM. You have to ask, but it's a good value -- if they can fix some of their problems.

  • Mark A.

Great service (no idea what the other reviews are talking about) and good food. The Louisiana Red Fish was fresh and very well cooked; good cole slaw (not too much mayonnaise) and sweet potato fries. The bourbon pecan pie was rich and tasty. Only complaints are no beers on draft, and the gumbo was a tad too watery.

The reviews say it all. We had a $100 coupon from the Sea Pines resort to use at a select number of places in the area, so we chose this one because of the view. The room felt a little cold and a bit dated. It was completely empty too which always feels weird when the waitstaff outnumbers the guests. But the view was very nice and they entire restaurant was kid and stroller friendly. We had excellent service but the food was just ok. I loved the fried green tomatoes with the arugula salad. Great crisp on the tomatoes and they didn't feel over done or greasy. The seared scallops were fine but the grits soooo heavy -- like lead in your stomach - and the black eyed pea salad was completely undercooked. Nothing worse than trying to eat beans that could have used more time on the stove. My sister in law somehow ended up with a fish bone on her plate of scallops which was gross but it happens. The restaurant compensated with a complimentary desert -- chocolate molten cake - which was fine. Thanks to the coupon, the price was reasonable but I wouldn't rush back.

Beautiful view and nice atmosphere. Service was good, but they got my brother-in-law's order wrong and the waitress immediately cleared herself from the mistake and did not compensate for the error with a complimentary dessert, which should have been done in a seemingly upscale restaurant as this was supposed to be. The adults in our party enjoyed their entrees of grilled scallops, grilled swordfish and grilled shrimp. And the kids menu had variety and they accommodated my daughter with a grilled cheese request that was not on the menu. However, the haricot verts side dish contained beans that were all untrimmed. I had the gumbo which was spicy and tasty, but the Caeser Salad was uninspiring, with too thick slices of cheese draped over the greens and whole chunks of roasted garlic randomly sitting on the plate. Also, the dressing had no flavor. Overall, this restaurant had good atmosphere, but it needed some help with the food to be worthy of a higher rating.

Pricey but worth it. Excellent seafood and excellent service. I had a half order of calamari for an appetizer, cobia for an entree and pecan pie for desert. It was the best meal I had all week. A great location with upscale decor and views of the harbor.

We had a very nice meal here. The crab bisque was really good... Just the right kind of creamy! The shrimp and grits were good but not great. The panoramic view is amazing... we watched a storm roll in. They also have a nice wine list- not huge but a really nice selection.

We went here for a family dinner during our week long stay in Hilton Head. They seated us at a window table overlooking the marina. It was beautiful. Our waiter, Vladimir, was very friendly without over doing it. He recommended some of the specials. I ordered the Pan Seared grouper with citrus butter. My uncle ordered the Tile fish, excellent! My cousin ordered the Corvina, he loved it! My other cousin ordered the Pacific Salmon and ate every last piece. Definitely a great place! A little pricey, but expected for HH.

An excellent seafood restaurant. Great service, and the food is fantastic. We shared three appetizers: shrimp cocktail, crab cake, and ocean scallops. All were expertly prepared, and beautifully plated. The shrimp were smaller (med/lg), but accompanied by a delicious salsa, rather than the standard cocktail sauce. The scallops were seared, sauced with bacon hollandaise, served with a hoe cake and peach relish. The crab cake was - well, a crab cake. Crab cakes are good or bad, and this one was good. For an entree, I had the blackened cobia. The fish was delicious, light and flaky, with a bit of heat from the spice. The collard greens were tart and tangy. The crispy pork belly paired well with them, and the deep fried cheddar grits were dressed with tomato jus, and as delicious as it sounds. Best meal of the trip so far! Highly recommended.

We took our family of 10 here last night and really enjoyed it. Great food and specials, good service, and the wine list was extensive enough to fit all the tastes at the table for reasonable prices. I would recommend the specials, I did the Chilean sea bass, but everyone enjoyed their meals. They've got everything you would want from crab bisque to stuffed oysters, peel and eat shrimp to delicate fish selections over greens and creamy mashed potatoes. Plus Harbor Town marina is a great settin for an evening out. The girls loved shopping before dinner.

We have eaten at this restaurant before when we visit Hilton Head because the view is great and the food has always been good. We wanted fried shrimp, but it was only on the Early Bird value menu, so we decided to go early and order the fried shrimp. This included soup or salad and a dessert. My husband's soup was delicious, my salad was fine, the desserts were very good. when the shrimp was delivered to the table, we were shocked to see that we each only got 5 small fried shrimp. Apparently, the value is for the restaurant. We didn't complain because we were the ones who ordered from this menu, which we only knew about because we had checked online. That menu was not offered to us when we entered the restaurant. we had to ask for it. That being said, the food was good, the service good and the view beautiful. However, be forewarned about the value menu!

Unlike most of my other Hilton Head Island dining experiences, this one was truly memorable. Outstanding service, extremely reasonable prices (especially for a wonderful selection of fresh fish that are prepared in a number of exciting ways) and a wonderful view of the water: THIS is what you want when you visit a coastal resort! The only drawback, if any, was parking: Along with having to access the Sea Pines section of HHI (which requires a fee if you can't access free passes), parking in the Shelter Cove area (where it is located) can be tricky. Still, once you are there, you can enjoy a sunset after your meal from the dock (where we were able to see a nearby dolphin) and soak up some of the atmosphere of others that are checking out other shopping, dining and entertainment.

Even if parking can be tricky, I have to give this place five stars for good food, and GREAT service and accommodation. I was recently in Hilton Head with the fam and, avoiding animal products, had eaten my fill of salads and pasta for the week. I was looking at menus online and saw that Topside has a veggie burger. Really? A veggie burger? Not 3 side salads, please. Not pasta with no butter or chicken or fish. A real entree for folks who don't want to eat meat, fish, or dairy! I gathered the troops and headed out to the restaurant only to find that the veggie burger is only on their lunch menu. PANIC!!!! I asked our server if they could possibly make one for me anyway, and they did!!!! With that one tiny bit of accommodation, they earned a customer for life. The veggie burger was awesome, as was their special drink, and the fish that the rest of my fam ate. In fact, there was not a disappointed pallet in the bunch!

Me and my family and my wife's family ate here on vacation and I do have to say that it was a really good experience. The menu is isn't to bad and the drink & wine list was pretty good as well. The waiter we had was doing all he could to make sure that everyone was taken care ( includeing my daughter) of and had refills but also forgot to bring my father in law his glass of wine till we were half way done eating. The food itself was dynamite. The portions was of good size. I got the special which had blackened shrimp, a medium rare steak (which was so tender you could cut it with a butter knife), mashed potato's and veggies. Was really stuffed and had a great view to boot. Looking over the marina in Harbor Town was pretty righteous with the sun getting ready to set. Can be pricey but well worth the cost. It was a good experience and worth a go, Would love to go here again.

Wonderful view of the sunset~Great place for family or group of people. The food is good too. The calamari is very good! And the kids menu is exceptional. Don't forget about the drinks!! The martini's are wonderful!

The food is mediocre and overpriced. But, the service is AWEFUL. Multiple missteps. With no apologies.

Great menu, great food, great atmosphere. Right by the harbor and you can see the 18th hole of harbortown. Perfect vacation spot.

Food is pretty good, nothing spectacular. But the view of the harbour & sunset, if you time it right, is wonderful.

Small portion sizes, but simple dishes made for a good meal. Nothing too special though, definitely worth the view of a sunset in the back deck. Service was very slow, but accommodating.

Topside has one of the best views on the entire island! We watched the sunset (into the clouds :( ) over the entrance to the harbor while we enjoyed drinks and a great dinner!

Wonderful view of the sunset~Great place for family or group of people. The food is good too. The calamari is very good! The crab cake was very well liked by a a member of the group as were the garden and wedge salads. The stuffed portabella caps and grilled Mahi Mahi were both excellent. And the kids menu is exceptional. Don't forget about the drinks!! The martini's are wonderful!
